The Roni has somewhat of a Marmite Effect on people – some love it, some hate it, and a few shrug at it. I personally rubbished it for some time, but recently I have changed my mind somewhat completely.
There are some things a Roni can do:
- Improve your accuracy and recoil control
- Provide real estate for you to fit optics, accessories, and slings
- You can leave it unattended in your vehicle
- It’s cheaper than an actual carbine, and you don’t need to licence it
And there are things a Roni can’t do:
- It doesn’t improve your handgun’s terminal ballistics
- It also doesn’t directly increase your magazine capacity – but it kind of indirectly does
Apart from these attributes, there are quite a few things worth unpacking about the Roni. Some you may agree with, and others you might not.
So, does the Roni have a purpose for South African gun owners? And is it worth the price tag? Watch this 10-minute video, and find out:
CHS Guns and Ammunition graciously entrusted me with their demo Roni (which I promptly put a dent into).

Hey Gideon
Thanks for the short video, appreciate it. I have come to pretty much the same conclusion as you re the Roni. I Rubbished it for a long time preferring the idea of buying an actual carbine / MP5 / CZ Scorpion But as mentioned then I have the licensing hassles not to mention a price tag between R12K and R25K.
Since I recently bought a CZ P10C which will become my EDC, I will be “converting “ my CZ P07 to a “PDW” by putting it into a Roni with red dot sight, Weapon light, P09 mags with +2/x bases, single point sling etc.
It makes a lot of sense, not to say I wouldn’t still like a Scorpion or MP5 but my budget is somewhat squeezed at the present time, I bought a n AR15 in Feb, a CZ 75 Compact (From a deceased estate) and a Lee Enfield SMLE MK III in the past month (all of which bargains) now I just need the licensing process to take place.

Hi Gideon
I agree with your take on the Roni. I used to think it was a waste of money, and that the money would be better served buying a real Pistol caliber carbine (CZ Scorpion or MP5 (anywhere from R12-20K for a clone not a real HK), however after chatting to several owners and taking a closer look at the Roni, I think that the idea of using a Roni to convert a handgun into a compact “carbine” (PDW) makes a lot of sense. I recently bought a CZ P10C to replace my P07 as my EDC, which gives me the option to put my P07 into a Roni, combine that with a Red dot sight, some P09 mags with +2/+5 bases (21/24 rounds per mag), a weapon mounted light and a sling and I have a nice compact PDW.
